The Field Geologist is accountable to the Manager, Short Range Planning for providing accurate and timely geological information and support to mine operations, extraction mine planning and geotechnical engineering personnel. The Production Geologist also supports production geology projects and the geological model build as-built process as required.

 

Challenges of the role

 

The primary challenge of this position is to ensure that sufficient geological information is readily available to all mine operations, extraction operations and mine planning/engineering groups at Suncor Energy - Oilsands via the various mediums available.

 

The incumbent must have an excellent understanding of oilsand geology and be able to clearly communicate this information to Mine Operations and Extraction Operations. The incumbent must also be competent to advise Mine Engineering about recovery processes and feed types and the application of geological theory to extraction processes.

 

As the position is field-intensive, the incumbent must have an excellent understanding of the geological model and understand how variations in the field affect ore quality delivery. General computer knowledge (utilizing the Microsoft suite) is also required in order to supplement the process.

 

Specific Accountabilities

 

The Field Geologist is accountable within Mine Engineering for geological reporting, updating geological sections, geological data control, sampling for associated projects, and innovation.

 

The incumbent will also fulfil health, safety and environmental requirements identified by departmental policy.

 

Working Conditions

 

A major portion of the time is spent in the field resulting to exposure to typical open pit hazards including; heavy mobile equipment traffic, noise, dust, dirt, and temperature extremes. The remainder is spent in an office environment with frequent opportunity to move about.

 

The position requires continuous mental concentration and flexibility. There is continued pressure to accommodate changing priorities, to meet deadlines, and to meet production and budgetary goals

 

Education Requirements

 

Preference will be given to applicants who possess a BSc Degree in Geology with a minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in a large open pit environment. Those who have a Technical diploma or posses a Mine/Civil Engineering degree from a recongnized institution and with similar practical experience will also be considered.
